President & CEO

Charles “Chuck” Hammond founded Hammond & Associates LLC in April, 2005.

Chuck began his career in fund raising in 1980 with the United Way of Southeastern Michigan, where he worked on the annual Torch Drive campaign in a variety of assignments.  In 1985, he was hired by the Detroit Zoological Society as its first Executive Director, a position he held for over 12 years.  Chuck’s tenure at the zoo was marked by dramatic increases in membership (2,000 to 49,000 families) and philanthropy, firmly re-establishing the Detroit Zoo as one of America’s best.

In 1997, Chuck moved to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit where, as Chief Development Officer, he successfully managed the completion of the $100 million “Cancer Care and Cure Campaign.”  In 1999, he served in a similar capacity at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit as Executive Director of the $150 million “Fund for the Future.”

In 2000, Chuck was recruited by The Alford Group, one of the nation’s leading non profit management consulting firms, to lead the new Great Lakes Regional Office.  In that capacity, he established a successful practice while serving notable regional and national clients.   Among them were:  The American Cancer Society Foundation; The American Red Cross – Southeastern Michigan Chapter; Detroit Public Schools Foundation, Detroit Public Television; HAVEN; Heidelberg College; and the University of Michigan.  Since founding Hammond & Associates LLC in 2005, Chuck has worked with 35 clients, including:   Children’s Hospital of Michigan; Greenhills School; Loma Linda University Medical Center; Marygrove College; Michigan Women’s Foundation; Pewabic Pottery; and United Methodist Retirement Communities.

Throughout his career, Chuck has held leadership positions on numerous non-profit boards and professional organizations, among them:  AFP Detroit; Common Ground Sanctuary; Christ Church Cranbrook; Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit; Oakland Executives Association; The Greening of Detroit; and Yatooma’s Foundation For The Kids.  He is a graduate of Leadership Detroit XVI and completed “Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management” at the Harvard Business School.  Chuck is a graduate of Albion College in Michigan.

 

Virginia E. Fallis
Vice President & Senior Counsel

Virginia Fallis became affiliated with Hammond & Associates LLC after serving four years with The Alford Group, first as a Senior Consultant and later as Vice President of the firm.  Virginia has over 20 years experience in the non-profit-sector.  From 1985 through 1995, she served in Annual Fund, Alumni Relations, and Campaign positions with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Albion College,  Bennington College, University Liggett School, and Oakwood Healthcare Systems.  In these positions, she gained extensive experience in building successful annual fund programs while managing the critical aspects of multimillion-dollar capital and endowment campaigns.

In 1995, Virginia moved to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra where she served for almost seven years as Director of Corporate Support and Director of Major Gifts.  Her tenure at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was marked by remarkable fundraising success as she oversaw the Orchestra’s $125 million “Concerto for Community and Orchestra” Campaign, which boasted a roster of 33 gifts of $1 million or more as well as the largest corporate fundraising program of any symphony orchestra in the nation.

As a consultant, Virginia has served more than 25 clients providing a broad range of services including strategic planning, feasibility studies, interim department management, capital campaign counsel and Kresge Foundation readiness counsel.   Among the clients served by Virginia include:  University of Michigan School of Education, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, Oakland Land Conservancy, American Cancer Society, HAVEN, MSU School of Music, Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan, Pewabic Pottery, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Heidelberg College.

A graduate of Leadership Detroit XXVIII, Virginia has been associated with many volunteer and professional organizations throughout her career, among them:  CASE; Big Brothers Big Sisters; First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, MI and First Congregational Church of Bennington, VT.  Virginia is past Chairman of the Development Committee for AFP’s Detroit Chapter and currently serves as past President of Madrigal Chorale of Southfield as well as chairman of the organization’s Vocal Scholarship Competition for the past 17 years. Virginia is a graduate of Albion College in Michigan and chaired the college’s 175th Anniversary celebration for metropolitan Detroit area alumni which took place in September 2010.

Melissa Combs
Counsel

Melissa Combs joined Hammond & Associates in June 2012 as Counsel and Manager of the firm’s satellite office in Ann Arbor.

Melissa began her professional life as a researcher, spending six years developing new products for a large chemical company.  In 2000, she made a career change and entered the world of nonprofits and fundraising.

She spent the next six years with The Charles Darwin Foundation in Washington DC, an organization supporting the conservation of the Galapagos Islands.  As Membership Manager and later, Director of Operations, she was responsible for the organization’s finances and managed their $2 million international membership program.  During this time, she gained valuable finance, granting, branding, messaging, strategic planning, and fundraising systems experience as well.

In 2004, Melissa moved to Michigan and continued her fundraising career.  She expanded into major gifts as Campaign Director for the ACLU of Michigan and, later, as Director of Development for the Ecology Center.
